The Last race

The Last Race is a very interesting story. Once you start reading, it is difficult to put the book down. There are various emotions including fear, mystery and suspense very well interwoven by the author. The different aspects of human nature and characters are very well brought out in the novel. The developments in the story are full of surprises and as the story unfolds it makes the reader curious to know further. A gripping novel with strong social message, it is not only interesting but thought provoking also. My heartiest congratulations to Mr Dangwal for this novel which is emotional, mysterious and powerful work.

The Gray Panther cause gets a boost in McGill’s sprightly tale of a septuagenarian who isn’t quite ready to be put out to pasture. Senior’s Sanctuary, a posh retirement home in eastern Pennsylvania is to be the new home of our heroine as the story opens, but Vicky, whose life up to now has been anything but sedentary, is not about to knuckle under to their way of living.
Her charm is revealed to us almost immediately as she proceeds to have fun with the nosy busybody who inquires as to her family heritage. She puts the snooty matron on her ear with an audaciously far-fetched tale of her family, involving them with the near-tragic results of Three Mile Island!
Vicky soon earns the respect of Doris Manley, the prim and proper superintendent of the rest home, who has to admit that she’s finally met her match in the impish matriarch as she sets about to allow the home to adjust to her mode of living. A strong distaste for her pink-lace surroundings leads Vicky to meet her interior decorator Roger Grant, who soon strikes up a sound friendship with the sparkling Ms Banning as they set about to change the stylings to suit her taste.
While the other patrons of the home are inclined to Lawrence Welk, Vicky’s preference runs more towards the Beatles as she proceeds to make a go of it in her solemn surroundings. A carefully thought out text enhances the design of the novel, which goes on to involve mayoral skullduggery in the acquisition of a nearby park, and various other dilemmas which Vicky takes in her stride. She’s ready, willing and able to get to the bottom of it in her own special way. That way is best described as ‘smarts’ for the streetwise Vicky can smell a rat at one-hundred paces, and is nobody’s fool when it comes to cover-ups.
The crux of McGill’s story seems altogether clear: do not discount the older generation, for they may prove to have a lot more on the ball than their younger counterparts. McGill doesn’t bog the issue down with a load of chastising. Rather, his heroine comes on like an older Auntie Mame, to whom life has always been one great adventure. His staccato style breathes life into his characters, especially the spry Ms Banning, who flits from situation to situation effortlessly. The author has made his novel a joy to read.
