Far Freedom
by A. Warren Merkey
Part 1: Keshona – Captain Jon Horss would have considered commanding the Union Starship Freedom except that: 1) he was already the captain of the Navy’s flagship; 2) he knew the Freedom would never return from its exploratory mission; 3) he did not enjoy Admiral Demba’s recruitment tactics, which included kidnapping him. But he could forgive her for killing him in hand-to-hand combat. Negotiations were interrupted, however, by this abandoned child Demba found on Earth who made things go from a typical Navy revenge fandango to classical opera before billions.
Part 2: Cryptikon – The Freedom crew consists of 3 admirals, 2 captains, about 20 Marines, 800 or so Navy crew of lesser rank, around 9,000 civilians, and a 9-year-old boy. The ship has no weapon greater than what a Marine can carry. It hasn’t launched from Navy Headquarters and already one admiral has been raped and a captain is mortally wounded. Things are temporarily better after Horss and Demba steal the ship and outrun Navy pursuit. The good things that lie ahead are not too bad, but the bad things are really bad.
Part 3: The Lady in the Mirror – The Freedom has fled to intergalactic space with two pregnant women whose combined ages are 450 years, and they are about to meet a pregnant alien who is two million years old. Hers is the only child ever born to her race and it is half human. Demba will make her leave her baby and journey to Earth to help avert a galactic catastrophe. The road to Earth will pass through Oz, Casablanca, High Cuba, and finally reach Kansas. There are barbarians along the road, and a half-alien baby, too long without its mother, will die.
