Auggie Asher enjoys life. With his friend, Benj, he roams the duchy tracking bandits, preserving the rights of citizens, and generally seeking adventure. Most officers in Vierna’s army aren’t afforded such freedom; it helps to be the son of the duke.
Of course, being heir to a powerful position isn’t all money and happiness. Ordering trained soldiers in battle is bad enough. Auggie can’t imagine making the wrong decision about something as mundane as how much grain to purchase and starving his subjects as a result.
Then, there’s his personal life. The idea of marriage, especially of love, doesn’t trouble him so much as what it represents – the responsibility he seeks to avoid. So far, he’s evaded all attempts to tie him down, but he has yet to meet Alaina. Not only will she captivate him thoroughly, but the troubles hunting her may be more than even he can conquer.
