Embedded Multiprocessors: Scheduling and Synchronization, 2nd Edition

Book Description

Techniques for Optimizing Multiprocessor Implementations of Signal Processing Applications

An indispensable component of the information age, signal processing is embedded in a variety of consumer devices, including cell phones and digital television, as well as in communication infrastructure, such as media servers and cellular base stations. Multiple programmable processors, along with custom hardware running in , are needed to achieve the computation throughput required of such applications.

Reviews important research in key areas related to the multiprocessor implementation of multimedia systems
Embedded Multiprocessors: Scheduling and Synchronization, Second Edition presents architectures and methodologies for systems in embedded digital signal processing (DSP) applications. It discusses application modeling techniques for multimedia systems, the incorporation of interprocessor communication costs into multiprocessor scheduling decisions, and a modeling methodology (the synchronization graph) for multiprocessor system . The book also applies the synchronization graph model to develop hardware and software optimizations that can significantly reduce the interprocessor communication overhead of a given schedule.

Chronicles recent activity dealing with single-chip multiprocessors and dataflow models
This edition updates the background material on existing embedded multiprocessors, including single-chip multiprocessors. It also summarizes the new research on dataflow models for signal processing that has been carried out since the publication of the first edition.

Database Systems: The Complete Book, 2nd Edition

Book Description

Systems: The Complete Book is ideal for Systems and and Application courses offered at the junior, senior and graduate levels in Computer Science departments. A basic understanding of algebraic expressions and laws, logic, basic data structure, concepts, and environments is implied.

Written by well-known computer scientists, this introduction to database systems offers a comprehensive approach, focusing on database , database use, and implementation of database applications and database systems.

The first half of the book provides in-depth coverage of databases from the point of view of the database designer, user, and application programmer. It covers the latest database standards :1999, /PSM, /CLI, JDBC, ODL, and , with broader coverage of than most other texts. The second half of the book provides in-depth coverage of databases from the point of view of the DBMS implementor. It focuses on storage structures, query processing, and transaction . The book covers the main techniques in these areas with broader coverage of query than most other texts, along with advanced topics including multidimensional and bitmap indexes, distributed transactions, and information integration techniques.

NOTEWORTHY FEATURES

  • Offers a readable presentation with engaging, real-world examples. Includes aspects of SQL not found in some other texts: SQL/PSM (persistent stored modules), JDBC (Java interface), and SQL/CLI (, or open database connectivity).
  • Introduces both design, through the ODMG standard ODL, and object-relational design from the SQL-99 standard.
  • Provides extensive coverage of query processing and query , supported by an extended relational algebra that is designed to match the real features of SQL. Covers information integration, including warehousing, mediators, , data cubes, and data-mining techniques.
  • Explains many important, specialized topics, such as error-correction in RAID disks, bitmap indexes, use of data , and pointer swizzling.
  • Supported by additional teaching materials on the book’s home page at ://www-db.stanford.edu/~ullman/dscb.html.

Systems Analysis and Design with UML, 3rd Edition

Book Description

You can't truly understand Systems and (SAD) by only reading about it; you have to do it. In Systems and , Third Edition, Dennis, Wixom, and Roth offer a hands-on approach to actually doing SAD. Building on their experience as professional systems analysts and award-winning teachers, these three authors capture the experience of actually developing and analyzing systems. They focus on the core set of skills that all analysts must possess––from gathering requirements and modeling business needs, to creating blueprints for how the system should be built.

From the Back Cover
A modern, hands-on approach to doing SAD––in UML!Get the core skills you need to actually do systems analysis and design with this highly practical, hands-on approach to SAD using UML! Authors Alan Dennis, Barbara Haley Wixom, and David Tegarden you through each part of the SAD process, with clear explanations of what it is and how to implement it, along with detailed examples and exercises that allow you to practice what you've learned.

Now updated to include UML Version 2.0 and revised, this Second Edition features a new chapter on the Unified Process, increased coverage of , and more examples.

  • Written in UML: The text takes a contemporary, approach using UML.
  • Focus on doing SAD: After presenting the how and what of each major technique, the text guides you through practice problems and then invites you to use the technique in a .
  • Rich examples of both success and failure: Concepts in Action boxes describe how real companies succeeded and failed in performing the activities in the chapters.
  • Project approach: Each chapter focuses on a different step in the Systems Life Cycle (SDLC) process. Topics are presented in the order in which they are encountered in a typical project.
  • A running case: This case threaded throughout the text allows you to apply each concept you have learned.

CMOS Processors and Memories

Book Description

Processors and Memories addresses the-state-of-the-art in integrated circuit in the context of emerging computing systems. New opportunities in memories and are discussed. Emerging materials that can take system beyond standard , like carbon nanotubes, graphene, ferroelectrics and tunnel junctions are explored.

CMOS Processors and Memories is divided into two parts: processors and memories. In the first part we start with high , low power , followed by a chapter on processing. They both represent state-of-the-art concepts in current computing industry. The third chapter deals with asynchronous that still carries lots of promise for future computing needs. At the end we present a "hardware space exploration" methodology for implementing and analyzing the hardware for the Bayesian inference framework. This particular methodology involves: analyzing the computational cost and exploring candidate hardware components, proposing various custom architectures using both traditional CMOS and hybrid nanotechnology CMOL. The first part concludes with hybrid CMOS-Nano architectures.

The second, memory part covers state-of-the-art SRAM, DRAM, and flash memories as well as emerging device concepts. Semiconductor memory is a good example of the full custom design that applies various analog and logic circuits to utilize the memory cell's device physics. Critical physical effects that include tunneling, hot electron injection, charge trapping (Flash memory) are discussed in detail. Emerging memories like FRAM, PRAM and ReRAM that depend on magnetization, electron spin alignment, ferroelectric effect, built-in potential well, quantum effects, and thermal melting are also described.

CMOS Processors and Memories is a must for anyone serious about circuit design for future computing technologies. The book is written by top notch international experts in industry and academia. It can be used in graduate course curriculum.

  • The only book on the market that covers advanced circuits for emerging technologies beyond standard CMOS circuit books
  • Written by a mixture of top industrial experts and key academic professors. Practical enough to understand how these technologies work, but not a product manual. enough but not pure academic theory from the ivory tower
  • Exploits potential behind new materials (SOI, SiGe, strained Si) that might carry circuit performance beyond standard bulk CMOS technology
